Richard Maize On The Joy of Mentoring

Richard Maize On The Joy of Mentoring

"There is more satisfaction in helping others, than in receiving help."

Los Angeles ---- April 21, 2010 ......This is the mantra Richard Maize, a Los Angeles real estate entrepreneur, has adopted since he made the decision to share his wealth of business knowledge, experience and expertise with young entrepreneurs as part of a mentoring program for young leaders in his local community.

About 10 years ago, Richard Maize - a founder of the Rochelle and Richard Maize Foundation - after a decade of running a highly successful real estate business, decided he wanted to share his knowledge and experience with those who were starting out, or who were struggling to make their businesses successful.

“I decided that after I retired, which I had hoped would be relatively soon, I would share my knowledge either with friends who were struggling in business, or those who were just starting out, “Richard Maize said.

“About four years ago a new division of the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, called YLDI (Young Leadership Development Initiative) asked me to mentor some young adults who were relatively new in the business world – more specifically, in the real estate industry in which I had made my mark."

Richard Maize added: “One of their projects was to recruit established Jewish businessmen or women to mentor the eager mentees who joined this group. It was not without a price – each mentor was asked to contribute $4,500 per year, but I joined in willingly.

“I have now been fortunate enough to be a mentor for the past four years and I’m pleased to say that I have met and enjoyed working with at least three great young men with tremendous futures as businessmen and community leaders," Richard Maize said.

“I love to give especially when I have something to give. It wasn't for the money as it costs the mentor to join to join the program.”

As an example, Richard Maize related how he was able to teach and guide one of the mentors and his business partner toward a successful purchase of mobile home parks.

“As a show of good faith and confidence in their plan, I became one of their investors: the offering showed enough promise to sell out of all the equity required,” Richard Maize added.

“Another mentee was starting a real estate commercial brokerage business and we discussed the possibility of his becoming a ‘niche’ brokerage to give him a unique positioning. This has been very successful.”

Richard Maize concluded: “This is so satisfying for me and it enables me to give something back to the community which is more than regular financial donations.

“There is a wise old Chinese proverb: ‘Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day – teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.’ This is exactly what I wanted to do in my senior years – teaching people ‘how to fish’.”

Richard Maize, a native of sunny California, is a philanthropist and supporter of the poor and hungry throughout the world, as well as in his hometown of Los Angeles.

Richard Maize actively promotes ecologically sound practices in his own home and provides useful information on "going green". He avidly supports the nation of Israel and is one of the first to be on the spot to lend a helping hand when disaster occurs around the world.

Richard Maize is dedicated to supporting worthwhile non-profit organizations in the US and Israel that give people “the chance to live healthier and happier lives,” according to Richard Maize.

Richard Maize generously contributes time and financial resources to community organizations that cover health, welfare, young leadership, the environment, art and culture. These include the
Los Angeles Police Foundation, American Cancer Society,
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services, Camp Harmony, Greystone Mansion and many others.

Richard Maize, through his foundation, Richard Maize Foundation, also provides support for a major benefit for the Big Brothers / Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles.

Richard Maize, who was responsible for the largest mortgage banking company in the US, also talks about his involvement with Israel. "The US and Israel have so many good, solid democratic and family values in common. It was great to contribute to the Maccabiah Games and sports competition between the Jews of Israel and the US. I can only imagine how well the Israel Defense Forces and the US military cooperate when they get together in fighting terrorism in this region."

As a young and ambitious graduate from
California State University, Northridge, Richard Maize began his business career investing in Southern California real estate. In 1988, he co-founded a mortgage banking company that has grown into one of the largest and most respected mortgage brokerage firms in the US. With an entrepreneurial spirit and tireless effort, Richard Maize expanded his business and became known as an industry expert, regularly appearing as a commentator for KCAL-TV news sharing his insights about real estate trends, marketing and finance.

An engaged and involved member of his local community in the

Through the foundation, Richard Maize contributions focus on working with various non-profit organizations, charitable endeavors and finding ways that will have the greatest ability to positively impact the lives of others.

Richard Maize, Ally Maize - A Tree Grows on Ventura Boulevard

April 2010 ..... As part of their action to add to the buzz around the recent Fabulous Eco Fashion Show, the Green Youth Movement, headed by Ally Maize, daughter of Los Angeles Real Estate entrepreneur Richard Maize, supported the Million Trees LA initiative in a community tree planting event in Woodland Hills, CA.

In addition to being an act of community responsibility it was a confirmation of the growth and importance of this young (in all senses of the word) movement, making a difference and drawing the community’s attention to vital environmental issues.

And so it was that Ally Maize’s Green Youth Movement collaborated with the Tarzana Chamber of Commerce initiative in launching a Million Trees LA event in Woodland Hills. (See Video at: http://tinyurl.com/yc9fuh3)

Million Trees LA is a cooperative effort between the City of Los Angeles, community groups, businesses, and individuals working together to plant and care for 1,000,000 trees planted where they’re needed most.

Richard Maize participated in the project together with other organizations and groups. These included the LA Conservation Corps, the US Forest Service, the Fire Department, the Department of Public Works, politicians, professional environmentalists, private gardeners, high school volunteers and teachers.

Richard Maize's keen interest in the environment, motivated by his daughter’s initiative with Green Youth Movement, resulted in his family donating 650 trees for planting after Halloween – one tree for every “Trick or Treater” who called on them.

Reporting on the planting on Ventura Boulevard, Richard Maize said the groups were supplied with traffic cones, shovels, picks and a water truck and given a “fast track” roadside education course in forestry:

“We learned that no tree can thrive if it is planted too low or too deep or too high,” Richard Maize said. “It was a wonderful experience,” he added. “...a truly cooperative effort to give something back to the community with everyone participating at their own level in their own way.”

The groups were divided into teams, and under the supervision of a Forest Ranger planted 25, 36 inch boxed trees in 2 hours along a busy urban artery.

One Million New Trees in the City of Los Angeles will create an extraordinary environmental legacy that will serve as a watershed for other environmental changes.

“Los Angeles will be transformed to a green, sustainable city in this important community effort," Richard Maize added.

Many of the one million new trees will be planted by City departments on public property, such as the Ventura Boulevard project. Others will be planted throughout the City by individual volunteers, community groups, organizations like GYM and businesses.

Million Trees LA will take several years and build on other programs that plant and care for the urban forest. Trees that maximize sustainability – with a preference on native and drought tolerant species – are recommended.

In addition, the City of Los Angeles is working with the USDA Forest Service, PSW Research Station, and the Center for Urban Forest Research to prepare a science-based tree canopy analysis to identify priority areas using satellite imagery and to recommend the right kinds of trees that will give the greatest ecological and societal benefits. Special attention will be given to schools, under-served communities, and those areas along the Los Angeles River.

Richard Maize Daughter - Ally Maize - Green Youth Movement – Changing the World “One Kid at a Time”

From a basic desire to do something to help the planet, and being inspired by Al Gore’s movie, “An Inconvenient Truth” to running a rapidly growing environmental non-profit organization that is grabbing the attention of opinion leaders and the media – including Al Gore himself – is the path young Ally Maize has taken over the past two years.
Now just 17-years-old, Ally – also known as Los Angeles’s “green teen”– is the driving force behind GYM – Green Youth Movement – set up to educate the younger generation about the meaning of “green” and how they can change the world “one kid at a time,” she says.
The story behind Ally Maize’s rapid climb to public recognition and acknowledgement by one of the world’s leading environmentalists – Al Gore – started at the Maize family dinner table in Los Angeles just two years ago.
Her father, Richard Maize, a Los Angeles Real Estate entrepreneur and community leader, said his daughter had always wanted to do something to help mankind.
“She would lend a hand helping the homeless and being active in community events, but she felt she had more to give, more to offer and wanted to do something that would make a real difference,” said Richard Maize, who helped Ally plan and set up the organization.
Ally says that Al Gore’s movie, “An Inconvenient Truth” was “such an eye opener for me.”
She continues: “It made me think that I had to so something. He’s doing so much and opening so many eyes across the country, I felt I should do something too...”
She discussed the initial idea with her father, Richard Maize, and asked him how to go about setting up a non-profit organization. With his experience as a founder of the Rochelle and Richard Maize Foundation, and his business acumen, Richard helped Ally outline what the organization would look like; what it’s goals and objectives should be; what obligations she would entail and generally how to run a non-profit organization. With help from business professionals, such as accountants, the GYM was brought to life.
The next phase of her mission saw Ally and her mom Rochelle, going out into the community to recruit kids and spread the GYM message around local schools.
Now with an exciting, highly informative web site (www.greenyouthmovement.org) and a dynamic program, the immediate goal is for kids to become aware of environmental issues.
She speaks regularly at elementary schools and youth groups throughout the area. “The aim is to get their wheels spinning in their heads about what they can do now and inform them of what’s going on,” said Ally.
And the message seems to be getting through. One parent told her how her daughter had written a four page paper about how Ally had inspired her to start changing her life (with regard to the environment) and said this is what she wanted to do.
Ally truly believes that living a green life is not that difficult, Ally says: “...the whole global warming issue is very big, but if you break it up into basics it’s not that overwhelming and if you just change one thing about your lifestyle, the impact is immense.”
Even Ally’s mom, Rochelle, ha been inspired b y her daughter’s work. As a residential real estate agent, Rochelle Maize has now been licensed as an “Eco Broker”– a licensed broker who advises clients how to turn their houses green and how to be more energy efficient.
Ally and GYM have a long list of additional achievements.
They have planted sustainable gardens at local schools and homes – including at the Maize home in Los Angeles. Super model Tyra Banks gave Ally and GYM special recognition on her show – together with a stunning makeover
Al Gore himself has acknowledged Ally’s work and was also the recipient of the Green Youth Movement Inspiration Award 2009 to thank the former vice president for inspiring the Green Youth Movement.
Ally and her organization also took Halloween to a new level last year with their “Hallo-Green” concept – everything about her family’s Halloween had an environmental "Eek-O Friendly" message, driving home the need to recycle and take care of the environment. Moreover, the Maize family has made a real contribution to the future:
"We had around 650 trick-or-treaters come by,” said Richard Maize, so our family committed to planting a tree for each and every trick-or-treater. We have thus planted 650 trees for the future," Richard Maize added.
Ally was also recently featured as a “Cool Kid” on ABC’s “Eyewitness News” television program.

In March 2010 she presented the Green Youth Movement 2010 Humanitarian Award to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, at LA Fashion Weekend’s official eco show “The Green Initiative”. In front of an audience of 400 people, Mayor Villaraigosa was honored for his unprecedented undertaking in making Los Angeles greener, cleaner, and healthier through the Million Trees LA Project. He also praised Ally’s work and pledged to take GYM to a national level. (See Video: http://vimeo.com/10387300 and http://vimeo.com/10393006 )

The event marks the beginning of a partnership between the Million Trees LA Project and GYM, the Green Youth Movement, to plant a brighter and healthier tomorrow for Los Angeles...a partnership which is guaranteed to take GYM to a leading position in young environmental activism and make young Ally Maize’s dream of doing something for mankind a dynamic reality.

Richard Maize Inspires Mentoring of Young Jewish Leaders in Los Angeles

Richard Maize Inspires Mentoring of Young Jewish Leaders in Los Angeles

By Larry Butchins
Israel News Agency

Los Angeles ---- March 23, 2010 …. . Inspiring young Jewish entrepreneurs and helping them make a success of their business and personal lives is a goal Los Angeles businessman Richard Maize.

Richard Maize has just renewed his volunteering commitment for 2010 with the Young Leadership Development Initiative (YLDI) for the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles.

As a volunteer mentor for the Real Estate and Construction Division of the Young Leadership program, Richard Maize, an established real estate and mortgage banking professional and co-founder of the Rochelle and Richard Maize Foundation, says he is "proud to again be among such a distinguished group of seasoned real estate professionals committed to educating and empowering young leaders."

"The Mentor / Mentee program calls on each mentor to make a sizable financial donation which enables young leaders to participate in monthly training sessions, a weekend retreat and a week-long mission to Israel," says Maize.

"Each mentee is assigned to a mentor for a full year. During that time, experienced and successful mentors give freely of their time and expertise in guiding their young charges through the minefield of business. They are given high level leadership training, networking opportunities, mentoring and Jewish Federation education."

As a part of the program, YLDI participants are responsible for initiating activities with their mentors. They meet each other several times yearly and have one scheduled joint speaking engagement at YLDI session meetings, which are held monthly. The program concludes with a graduation and mentor appreciation ceremony, where graduates make special presentations to thank the mentor group.

To date, Richard Maize, who is also a founder of the Rochelle and Richard Maize Foundation, has had four mentees.

"Being a mentor is a fulfilling experience and offers the opportunity to contribute knowledge and insight to guide and influence a future leader in his or her professional development path," says Richard Maize.

"This is an absolute pleasure for me. It was always my hope, as I looked towards eventual retirement, that I would be able to help my close friends do a little better in their own businesses. Now helping young people achieve their goals is even better than I ever expected. You have their respect as a successful Jewish middle-aged businessman and you can really make a difference," says Maize.

"Even as my own business and personal life confronted many challenges, the mentees, through their continued admiration for me, were as much a source of support for me, as I was for them," says Richard Maize.

Richard Maize has now helped all four of his mentees create successful niches in their business lives. Richard Maize tells how he influenced his most recent mentee, who wanted to develop mobile home parks throughout the country, to change his business model. He felt the program was just not right for investors; the mentee listened, amended his approach and has now just closed his first two projects - with Richard Maize as his first limited partner investor!

Richard Maize tells how a previous mentee was having difficulty in his private life and had become lost in his business direction. After many hours of consultation and encouragement, Richard Maize was able to help his mentee find the best approach for his business in the changing economic climate in the realm of real estate. The mentee is now working in business investments.

The Rochelle and Richard Maize Foundation is a philanthropic organization that supports and contributes volunteer and financial resources to causes locally in the community and worldwide by supporting meaningful programs focusing on art, culture, family services and healthcare that work to help people live more fulfilling lives. The Foundation has generously supported organizations and causes including the American Cancer Society, Vista , Hurricane Katrina, Los Angeles Police Foundation, and Cedars Sinai Board of Governors, media coverage of Israel humanitarian relief efforts in Haiti after the earthquake in January and the Israel Maccabiah Sports Games.

Richard Maize was a frequent guest on KWHY-TV’s Mortgage Update segments, articulately discussing the volatilities of the real estate industry.

As a young and ambitious graduate from California State University, Northridge, Richard Maize began his business career investing in Southern California real estate. In 1988, he co-founded a mortgage banking company that has grown into one of the largest and most well-regarded mortgage brokerage firms in the country. With an entrepreneurial spirit and tireless effort, Richard Maize expanded his business and became known as an industry expert, regularly appearing as a commentator for KCAL-TV news sharing his insights about real estate trends, marketing and finance.

An innovator always intent on finding solutions, Richard developed the "Power Pak" loan processing software which today is rated as one of the best technologies in the real estate and mortgage banking industry.

An engaged and involved member of his local community in the US, Richard Maize continues to be involved professionally and personally in relevant causes. Richard Maize uses Web 2.0, new media, social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to reach out to Jewish youth.

A leader, mentor and dedicated mortgage professional, Richard Maize resides in Beverly Hills along with his wife and Foundation co-founder, Rochelle Atlas Maize and their two daughters, Amanda and Ally.

“This was my first visit to Israel, and I was amazed by the warmth and strength of these Jews who built a Jewish state and turned a barren desert into a green paradise. But what struck me more than anything was how tiny and resilient this democratic state is. That the people of Israel have suffered and bled from hundreds of barbaric Islamic terror attacks."

Los Angeles Committee of 18

"Committee of 18" members are among Los Angeles` business, entertainment and community leaders who commit to raising $1.5 million to elevate the games globally and enabled 350 qualifying athletes who otherwise would not be able participate, a chance to compete in Tel Aviv in this years` Maccabiah Games.

"It is truly an honor and privilege for me to be an active working member of this group of renowned leaders who have come together as a small, but powerful force, to highlight the importance of the 18th Maccabiah Games," said Richard Maize, co-founder of the Richard Maize Foundation.

"I am firmly committed to do everything I can, personally and through the Richard Maize Foundation, to support the committee in its mission to raise awareness for the Maccabiah games and ensure that deserving athletes are afforded the opportunity to compete in Tel Aviv," Richard Maize added.

"This was one of the most exciting events at the 18th Maccabiah," says Richard Maize. "The game was fought hard by both sides and went into overtime. The fact the US won was overshadowed by the warm smiles and embraces displayed by both the players of Israel and Team USA."

“The Maccabi Games instill an appreciation of Jewish values, competitive sporting experiences and the spirit of community involvement in a memorable and rewarding environment,” said Richard Maize, co-founder of the Richard Maize Foundation.

Richard Maize, who was responsible for the largest mortgage banking company in the US, continues: "The US and Israel have so many good, solid democratic and family values in common. Maccabiah Games

Richard Maize was involved in a totally different aspect of Israeli life last year when he was appointed a member of the Committee of 18 which supported the 18th Maccabiah World Games that took place in Israel earlier this year.

The Committee, composed of 18 members, committed themselves to raising sufficient funds for the Maccabiah Games. The important group’s members include representatives from the entertainment industry, leading businessmen and well-known community leaders. With the goal of raising the status of the Maccabiah Games, they agreed to work towards the goal of raising more than $1.5 million. The available funds were divided between the 350 athletes who would not have been able to participate in the games without aid from the Committee of 18.

Even though the youth had trained for quite a long time for the Games, their families did not have the funds involved in traveling to Israel and participating in the events. The money raised by the Committee of 18 sponsored delegates from communities in Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union Republics, India and Latin America.

“It was truly an honor and privilege for me to become an active working member of this dedicated group of renowned leaders who came together as a small, but powerful force, to highlight the importance of the 18th Maccabiah Games,” said Richard Maize.

Richard Maize continued: “I am firmly committed to do everything I can, personally and through my Richard Maize Foundation, to support the committee in its mission to raise awareness for future Maccabiah games and ensure that deserving athletes are afforded the opportunity to compete in Israel.”

Membership to the Committee of 18 is by invitation only. Every one of the 18 members hold equal status, so they are all said to be a co-chair of the committee that holds no elected officers.

The Committee of 18 and Richard Maize were able to increase the exposure for the Games by obtaining commercial sponsors, finding sources of television opportunities with large agencies in Los Angeles and landed some brand name clothing sponsorships and endorsements.

Teenagers Tour Israel

Teenage athletes from Diaspora countries came together for over two weeks of sports competitions, traveling around Israel, meeting Israelis and hanging out with their fellow athletes as participants of the Maccabiah Games.

The general experience was the trip of a lifetime for these young sportsmen. They were guided around to vital sites in Israel including the Western Wall, Yad Vashem, Masada, the Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee, making the Maccabiah Games a large tourism campaign for Israel. The events attracted close to 18,000 supporters and tourists, increasing Israel's economy by approximately $80 million.

Deemed as the largest display of international Jewish fellowship and solidarity, the Richard Maize Foundation was a generous supporter of these young athletes and Richard was happy to support positive public relations for Israel.

As members of the Committee of 18, each of the co-chairs were invited to attend the Maccabiah Games with their families as VIP guests, tour Israel, and enjoy the festivities. Each member enjoyed viewing the sporting events from the grandstands, cheering each of the youth on to do their best.

The Committee of 18 also served as an official advisor to Mr. Eyal Tiberger, Director-General and Executive Director of the 18th Maccabiah Games during the games, offering well respected professional assistance and advice concerning entertainment, media, digital public relations, marketing and advertising for the event. The Maccabiah Games are a quadrennial sports, educational, and cultural event that occurs in Israel. This past year Israel played host to some 3,000 young athletes in what is said to be the third largest sporting event in the world. The sportsmen, aged 15-18, included 2,000 masters, 5,000 open athletes and Paralympics, with more than 2,000 Israeli athletes on the team. More than 400,000 Jews in 400 different organizations located in 60 countries take part in the Maccabiah Games.

Before leaving the U.S. to attend the Games in Israel, Richard Maize hosted some of the members of the Committee of 18 at his home in Beverly Hills. One of those attending was Los Angeles resident and entertainer Kirk Douglas. As Douglas related, “I am very excited about these games, because sport is an international language that brings people together, not tears them apart.”

During their time in Israel, Richard Maize and the Committee of 18 also joined Israel Defense Forces pilots and soldiers from the Israel Air Force at the Tel-Nof Air Force Base in Israel.

“This was my first visit to Israel, and I was amazed by the warmth and strength of these Jews who built a Jewish state and turned a barren desert into a green paradise. But what struck me more than anything was how tiny and resilient this democratic state is. That the people of Israel have suffered and bled from hundreds of barbaric Islamic terror attacks. The Richard Maize Foundation is now exploring how we can provide assistance to the victims of Islamic terrorism both in the U.S. and in Israel,” said Richard Maize.

Richard Maize and Family Supports Chase Child Life Services Golf Day Fund Raiser

The Richard Maize Foundation has rallied to the support of the Chase Foundation's Child Life Program a non-profit organization which addresses the social, emotional, and developmental needs of children dealing with the stress of illness and hospitalization.

The program was originally established by the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital nearly 40 years. In 2000 it was renamed in honor of Chase Richards who died from cancer at the age of two-years-old. His parents, Susan and Robin Richards, co-founded the Chase Foundation with the aim of ensuring that the Child Life Program was available at no cost to patients under the age of 21 and their families.

Through the Chase Foundation Annual Golf Tournament, held for the past 12 years to raise funds in support of the Chase Child Life services, the Maize family has generously participated in the sponsorship effort.

This year's tournament was held on November 9 at the El Caballero Country Club. Thousands of dollars were raised to ensure that every child admitted to Los Angeles Children's Hospital will be able to participate in and benefit from its Child Life program.

Richard Maize commented: "We were honored to be able to support the efforts of the Chase Child Life Services through our participation in this fun event ... the event may be fun, but the intent behind it is deadly serious - We are talking about improving the lives of hospitalized children and their families."

According to Susan and Robin Richards, the Chase Foundation’s sole mission is to support the Chase Child Life Program which operates on the principle that the best medical care alone isn’t enough. The Child Life Staff addresses the emotional, social, and developmental needs of children. The Chase Child Life Program strives to promote optimum development of children and their families, to maintain normal living patterns and to minimize psychological trauma. Their moving story is related in their web site: (www.chasefoundation.org)

"We lost our son, Chase, shortly after his second birthday. Cancer relentlessly took his life, but his last few weeks were spent in a hospital where, remarkably and thankfully, he was given the chance to be a child. In between procedures, Chase and his siblings met with Child Life Specialists who helped them learn how to deal with this terrible situation. They were able to play, draw, be with other children and forget about his illness, even if for only a few minutes, thanks to the Child Life Program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

After Chase passed, we learned that only a fraction—about 25% of the hundreds of children at the hospital each day—had access to the program due to limited funding. We were determined to help secure the financial resources to see that every child at the hospital gains access to the Child Life Program and its art, play, therapy and interactive programs. We started a nonprofit organization—The Chase Foundation—to generate significantly more financial support for the Child Life Program and to create better play spaces for the children on every patient floor.

"When we founded the Chase Foundation there was one playroom and two specialists working with the kids. Because of our foundation's support there are now six playrooms, one Teen Lounge and 20 specialists. We will always remember how the children enjoyed playing at the hospital, and are determined to see that more children each year gain a few more moments of peace, fun and childhood in their incredible young lives and incessant battles with illness," said Richard Maize.

Richard Maize Sponsors Archer Dads, L.A. Works, Children Uniting Nations

Despite his dedicated involvement in the world of business, initiating and sponsoring international human rights advocacy Web sites and being involved in major national support programs, Richard Maize and his family is very grounded in the local Los Angeles community and is very active and visible in supporting and working for local events and charities.

Witness his involvement in two major local events – and the heart-warming story of a lost puppy.

Since the beginning of this month, and particularly this past weekend, the Richard Maize Foundation initiated a call for volunteers to help with “The Great Pumpkin” a drive to raise funds through Pumpkin Patch for Charity.

Local organization, Archer Dads, in association with the L.A. Works, City Year and Rock the Classroom, held a Pumpkin Patch and Halloween Carnival in conjunction with the Archer Fall Festival this past weekend. In making the call for volunteers, Richard Maize said he felt a strong need to be involved with local community events and dedicated himself and his family to community service at a grass-roots level.

“This is our community, this is where we live and work, and this is where our friends and associates are," said Maize. "We are committed to helping the local community apart from all the apparently significant national and international events and organizations in which I and my family have been and are involved, we see the local community as a prime target of our humanitarian work.”

As a further example of this approach, Richard Maize and his family are instrumental in sponsoring Children Uniting Nations (CUN), a proactive organization created to bring attention to the plight of “at-risk” and foster youth.

The goal is to reach as many children in out-of-home care by offering role-model support, guidance, and a sense of community and to promote the importance of education.

“The support services, awareness and advocacy provided by CUN have resulted in large-scale community involvement successfully proliferating positive achievements in the lives of children in foster care. CUN brings to the table a strong community collaborative designed by regarded experts in the foster care and mentoring communities,” said Richard Maize. "In support of the organization to raise funds for the organization, a day of the child, has been organized for Sunday, November 22, at the Santa Monica airport."

Day of the Child is a free, one-day event benefiting foster and at-risk youth that features live entertainment by chart topping music groups, celebrity appearances, food and festivities.

Past celebrities and entertainers include Stevie Wonder, Black Eyed Peas, WyclefJean, Chaka Khan, Colby O’Donis, Maria Conchita Alonso, Miguel Nunez, Christina Milian, Aaron Carter, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, The Power of Three, DJ Spinderella, Slade Smiley and Erik Estrada.

This is the organization’s largest mentor recruitment event, consisting of over two thousand attendees including foster children, mentors and volunteers,” Richard Maize quoted the event’s organizers as saying.

“A huge promotion of public awareness to the needs of foster and at-risk children, through extensive media coverage is needed.”

Support by individuals, organizations and companies and will pay for the mentoring of hundreds of children in Los Angeles for a day of filling hopes and dreams. Sponsorship also provides support for training of permanent mentors for foster children.

But sponsorship and organizational support aside, Richard Maize has a soft spot for animals – particularly lost animals.

Richard tells of a recent incident, a “doggy dilemma”, in which he and his wife found a stray dog.

“As we were walking our two dogs in our neighborhood, we found a lost dog wandering on the streets. We bent down do find that the dog had no collar around its neck. In fear that the dog would either be taken – or worse – we picked it up and took it home, which was about three blocks from where we found it wandering. The dog was a cute female Shih-tsu."

“As seen many times in the past when dogs are lost, there are many signs posted on trees and lamp posts describing lost dogs with a phone number. There were no such signs anywhere,” Richard recounts.

“I went traveling up and down the streets stopping other dog walkers and neighbors showing them this dog and asking if they knew who owned it. No one knew."

“The third day of caring for this dog, we decided to plaster the neighborhood with our own signs. After three more days there were no calls. We even went to the local veterinarian hoping the dog carried a computer chip and we could thereby identify the owners. There was a chip that was under the dog’s skin that was probably there at birth, but it was not activated with any information. We called the local dog pound in hopes someone was looking for their dog."

“Now, we had boarded this dog for six days doing everything responsibly to find its rightful owner. Having a third dog in our house is something we really didn’t want in our lives. I needed to find a caring family to take this dog as their own.”

Richard Maize continued: “I found this lonely, yet capable elderly couple to care for this dog. The dog and the couple fell instantly in love with each other.

“I learned that the couple canceled their evening plans to go to dinner to care for this dog. They went to the local pet store to buy the proper food and gave their new dog a bath and haircut. The couple made a special place on their bed for the dog to sleep.

“Yesterday, I got a call from the supposed owner. He had seen a sign on his street. I told him that after I had acted in what I believed was a totally responsible way, I gave the dog to an elderly couple who love the animal and will give it a good home."

“I added that he had now put me in a very uncomfortable position. Most importantly, this could break the hearts of a nice couple to whom I had entrusted the dog," said Richard Maize.

“Why did it take him eight days to call or even seriously look for this dog? Is he a good owner of the dog? Does he even care? Was it my responsibility to house this dog for six days while searching for the owner? Did he lose the right to the dog? It is now 24 hours since he called me, and had yet to follow it up with another call. If it was one of my dogs, I would not sleep until I found my dog doing everything I could to find it."

“This is a real dilemma – we believe we acted responsibly, notifying the entire neighborhood about the stray animal, he took either days to respond but do I have the right to decide how long is the right amount of time to take a dog away from its owner?

“One last thing I didn’t mention - the elderly couple are my mom and dad.”

The Richard Maize Foundation generously supports foundations and causes such as the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, the American Cancer Society, Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services, Hurricane Katrina, Big Brothers / Big Sisters (BBBS) of Greater Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Board of Governors, Los Angeles Police Foundation and the Jewish Maccabi Sports Games, one of the world’s largest annual summer sporting competitions for Jewish youth.

Most recently, The Richard Maize Foundation sponsored the UN Goldstone Israel Gaza War Report and the Israel Human Rights websites to illustrate how a free and open democracy such as Israel has the basic right to defend herself against unprovoked Islamic terrorism from Gaza.

A leader, mentor and dedicated banking mortgage professional, Richard Maize resides in Beverly Hills along with his wife and foundation co-founder, Rochelle Atlas Maize and their two daughters, Amanda and Ally.

Richard Maize Inspires Wealthy To Aid Homeless During Hanukkah, Christmas

Richard Maize Inspires Wealthy To Aid Homeless During Hanukkah, Christmas

By Joel Leyden

Los Angeles ---- December 25, 2009 …… Richard Maize and his family have been respected for their philanthropy, the giving of thousands of dollars to dozens of charities over the years.

These charities have included organizations and causes including the American Cancer Society, Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services, Hurricane Katrina, Los Angeles Police Foundation, 18th Maccabiah Games in Israel and Cedars Sinai Board of Governors.

Rochelle Maize was among those recently honored at the Los Angeles Business Journal’s seventeenth annual Women Making a Difference Awards.

Together with her husband, Richard, the Maize Foundation has been reaching out to help those in need from LA to Jerusalem. But most of their good efforts were limited to writing out checks from the comfort of their Beverly Hills home. This physical distance from those that Richard and Rochelle Maize were actually helping was broken down in the past week.

Leaving the luxury of their multi million dollar home, Rochelle Maize, Ally Maize and Richard Maize ventured out on a cool evening in honor of the spirit of Hanukkah and Christmas to downtown Los Angeles where food is provided to the homeless and the hungry.

The food is donated by a wide variety of companies and organizations and is given to those less fortunate every evening.

“ I was very surprised and shocked by what I saw,” said Richard Maize. “I never knew that there were so many homeless and hungry people living just a few miles from my home. That they were being fed every night through the generous efforts of some very good people. I learned quite a bit from the experience.”

Richard Maize, who operated the largest the mortgage banking company in the US, continues: “Rochelle and I arranged for a donation of approximately 300 individual polyester blankets. Before I left home, I quickly went through my closet and drawers and found many shirts, sweaters, shoes, a jacket, tee-shirts and socks to fill up a large trash bag in hopes these pieces of clothing would find a good home. There were various other donations we brought from other families that filled another trash bag mostly of woman's clothing.”

Maize continues: “When we arrived, about 6 pm, there was a very orderly and long line of the underprivileged people waiting to be served their daily dinner. It was great to see the how nice these people were to each other and the how great the volunteers were to the homeless. I have never interacted with the underprivileged before this evening. Other than giving handouts in way of cash when asked, is about all I have done. Perhaps I was a bit frightened by them or concerned of their sometime uncleanliness.”

As a young and ambitious graduate from California State University, Northridge, Richard Maize began his business career investing in Southern California real estate. In 1988, he co-founded a mortgage banking company that has grown into one of the largest and most well respected mortgage brokerage firms in the US. With an entrepreneurial spirit and tireless effort, Richard Maize expanded his business and became known as an industry expert, regularly appearing as a commentator for KCAL-TV news sharing his insights about real estate trends, marketing and finance.

Richard Maize was also a frequent guest on KWHY-TV’s Mortgage Update segments, articulately discussing the volatilities of the real estate industry. An innovator always intent on finding solutions, Richard developed the "Power Pak" loan processing software which today is rated as one of the best technologies in the industry.

Since his early years, Richard Maize, a financial genius with a heart of gold, has only known success. And as such he has associated primarily with the rich and famous.

But this cold, dark night in LA walking among and talking to homeless men and women was about to change his life.

“Most of these poor and homeless people had a preference on the color of the blanket that they were about to receive. They had a choice of blue or tan and took only one as requested. There were a few that were quite desperate and tried to take more than one blanket. The type of clothes that they wanted was also interesting. They were by and large very particular in the color and size. They would walk away, in some instances, without any of these luxurious pieces of clothing if the size or color wasn't perfect. I found it totally amazing.”

Maize states: “I was speaking to one man who was, in his words, in charge of different events for a few companies. He was well paid getting around 80,000 dollars annually and two years ago, he was let off and no family to turn to or in his case not wanting to. He was well spoken and obviously educated. He was sitting among the homeless. He was a pretty interesting guy. I offered him money 20 dollars that he refused because he didn't want personal handouts. You never know where life will lead. Much of it is skill, but a lot of it is luck. This man had lost all of his luck.”

“The next person I met really stood out. Picture this, there was an African American about 6'3" and about 225 pounds. Our eyes met as he was picking up a blanket. He was well groomed and dressed in clean clothing,” said Richard Maize.

“As we spoke, he told me that it was important to keep hygienically clean. He spends about 2 dollars a day to take a shower daily at some type of YMCA – Young Men’s Christian Association or other similar club and he washes his clothing regularly. He wore what appeared to be a diamond earring stud in one of his ears. He looked great and was prideful in his appearance. He told me he lost his family and job due to drugs but have has now been clean for almost 3 years. He speaks to many homeless to try to make them or keep them clean.”

Maize continues: “I went deep in my bag of clothing and pulled out a Swede yellow jacket that was mine yet very big on me. I hadn't worn it for 3 years. I needed to find the right person to hand it to. I think I found him. I asked him if he wanted it. He replied: ‘lets see it’ and then with a smile said: ‘sure. thanks so much’.

“Before he went his own way, I said to him that this jacket was very special. It once cost close to 500 dollars. I didn't say that so I would get a better ‘thank you’. I mentioned it to him so that he might take pride in his new article of clothing. He was elated. He walked across the street to show it to his buddies. Then, he folded it up neatly and placed it under his arm to carry for safekeeping. Finally, as it was getting cooler, he put the jacket over his body. It fit perfectly. He then walked down the street with his head high with pride. It was unbelievable.”

Maize reflects: “I am far from perfect. I have made my share of mistakes. The important thing is to learn from these mistakes and not repeat them. To learn from others, from those whose lives either through economic conditions or emotional problems have hit rock bottom.”

Richard Maize, now looking down with tears swelling up in his eyes, then said: “I realized how important having socks and tee-shirts were to these people. I am now going to buy 20 dozen socks and t-shirts at Costco and bring them back there tomorrow evening. Not just for Hanukkah, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day but for a few evenings every month. I was taken in by these people and want to help more. To bring just one smile, just one evening of warmth and comfort to someone who has fallen through the cracks, this is what we should all strive for throughout the year.”
